From Group To Team---Getting There!

You have been assigned to a group of people and are working together to become a team. I would like you to read the information that I have provided below. As you read this, I want you to think about how your group is developing into a team. Using the information below answer these questions.

1. What makes your group unique?
2. What is group doing successfully to develop into a team?
3. What does your group need to improve in their team development?
4. How do you feel about all members being accountable for failures and successes?

A team is a group of people coming together to collaborate. This collaboration is to reach a shared goal or task for which they hold themselves mutually accountable. A group of people is not necessarily a team. A team is a group of people with a high degree of interdependence geared towards the achievement of a common goal or completion of a task rather than just a group for administrative convenience. A group, by definition, is a number of individuals having some unifying relationship.

From Group To Team -- Getting There

Be Enthusiastic -- it's Contagious

Become enthusiastic about one aspect at a time. Start by initially looking for a quick problem to be solved. Most teams trace their advancement to key performance oriented events that forged them together. Potential teams can set such events in motion by immediately establishing a few challenging, yet achievable goals.

First, find a problem and start to talk about it with the team; do not delegate it to an individual or small group, make it a project for everybody. Choose a simple, but distracting work-related problem and solicit everybody's views and suggestions. Next, get the problem solved. Demand urgency against a clear target. There is no need to allocate large amounts of resource or time to this, simply raise the problem and make a fuss. When a solution comes, praise it by rewarding the whole team. Also, ensure that the aspects of increased efficiency, productivity, and/or calm are highlighted since this will establish the criteria for success. When the problem has been solved, find another (preferably bigger) one and repeat.

Develop a Sense of Urgency

Team members need to believe the team has an urgent and worthwhile purpose. Establishing a sense of urgency and direction will help them know what their expectations are. The more urgent and meaningful the need to reach a goal, the more likely it is that a real team will start to emerge. The best teams define their performance expectations, but are flexible enough to allow changes to shape their own purpose, goals, and approach.

Set Clear Rules of Behavior

Teams develop rules of conduct to help them achieve their purpose and performance goals. Some rules you might want to consider:
  • attendance - no interruptions to take phone calls
  • discussion - no sacred cows
  • confidentiality - personal revelations must remain among the team
  • analytic approach - facts are friendly
  • constructive confrontation - no finger pointing
  • the most important - everyone does real work

Keep Them Informed

Challenge your team with fresh facts and information. New information causes a potential team to redefine and enrich its understanding of the objectives, thereby helping the team to set clearer goals.

Grow Together

Teams must spend a lot of time together (bonding), especially in the beginning. Yet potential teams often fail to do so. The time spent together must be both scheduled and unscheduled. Creative insights as well as personal bonding require impromptu and casual interactions.

Reinforcement Works Wonders

Exploit the power of positive feedback, recognition, and reward. Positive reinforcement works as well in a team context as elsewhere. For example, by being alert to a shy person's initial efforts to speak up, allows you to encourage continued contributions.

Other methods include:

  • Focus on both development and performance. Make teamwork the norm for all actions. Model teamwork in the way you conduct business and the way you interact with your colleagues.
  • Use all your leadership tools, such as coaching, counseling, mentoring, tutoring, and concentrating on improving performance.
  • Use informal processes, such as the way you communicate, showing respect, and appreciating and celebrating their achievements.
  • Your feelings must show commitment, loyalty, pride, and trust in your team.
  • Share the credit.
  • Create subcommittees for key areas and give them decision making authority.
  • Take turns having a different member facilitate or lead the meetings.
  • Talk last in discussions, after you've heard from the others.
  • Be clear about when you're expressing your own personal opinion, that of the organization, or that of the whole team.
Leadership shows itself in the inspired action of team members. Traditionally, organizations have assessed leaders by their actions and behaviors. But, the best way to assess leadership is by the degree to which people surrounding leaders are inspired. It is this inspiration that leads organizations on to excellent performance, rather than mediocre performance.

Team members are deeply committed to each other's personal growth and success. That commitment usually transcends the team. A team outperforms a group and outperforms all reasonable expectations given to its individual members. That is, a team has a synergistic effect -- one plus one equals a lot more than two.

Team members not only cooperate in all aspects of their tasks and goals, they share in what are traditionally thought of as management functions, such as planning, organizing, setting performance goals, assessing the team's performance, developing their own strategies to manage change, and securing their own resources.

A team has three major benefits for the organization:

  1. It maximizes the organization's human resources. Each member of the team is coached, helped, and led by all the other members of the team. A success or failure is felt by all members, not just the individual. Failures are not blamed on individual members, which gives them the courage to take chances. Successes are felt by every team member, this helps them to set and achieve bigger and better successes. In addition, failure is perceived as a learning lesson.
  2. Its output is superior, even when the odds are not in its favor. This is due to the synergistic effect of a team -- a team can normally outperform a group of individuals.
  3. There is continuous improvement. No one knows the job, tasks, and goals better than the individual team members. To get real change, you need their knowledge, skills, and abilities. When they pull together as a team, they will not be afraid to show what they can do. Personal motives will be pushed to the side to allow the team motive to succeed.

  1. The thing that makes our group unique, I feel, is the fact that we all get a long and genuinely like each other. We have come a long way since we were first put together because at first no one would really talk and now we are all comfortable enough where we can joke around with each other. We are successfully developing into a team because we all count on each other and know that each one of us will complete a task assigned to us. Everyone in our group knows what the other group members expect out of us and it pushes us to do the best we can to not let each other down. However, our group needs to make sure we take some things such as meeting times more seriously in order to improve our development into a team. I feel very good about the fact that if our group/team succeeds or fails, it is the whole group/team's fault. We cannot just put the blame on one or two people if we fail, and I feel that everyone in our group would be able to accept that and know it was a group/team effort and we succeed or fail as a group or team.

  2. I think that our group is unique because we all laugh and joke get along. It is not awkward when we hang out because we can all say whatever we want and not feel bad about it. We are comfortable with each other and so we all chip in and speak our opinions. To be a successful team we all communicate and help out if someone needs it. We need to improve our meeting schedule and have everyone be at every meeting because we can't accomplish our goal as a team without everyone present. The whole team is accountable for everyone not just themselves because we are a group/team and there is no "I" in either of those words. One person fails we all fail so we have to work together to succeed.

  3. One thing that makes our group unique is that we have a team name ha. TREMENOUS FOUR and yes spelled just like that. My group understands what i mean :) Our group has become to be more like friends and when we work together we all help out. We understand what our parts are and what we expect as a group. I believe we are a successful group and we all get along well. We don't have great artistic abilities but thats okay, we have fun. We communicate well and everyone comes to meetings working around everyone's schedules and we respect that. We communicate well as a group and everyone has their own ideas, we all contribute towards success. But if we were to fail, we would all feel the impact because i think as a group we all have equal responsibility and we have our expectations, we want to do well and for my group, I think we can.

  4. I think my group is unique is that we all bring something a little bit different to the group. That we can have fun even when we need to be serious. We talk together and make sure things are getting done. We are communicating and working together to become successful. W are not just listening to one but to each other. We have taken our parts in the group and figured what each needs to do. Our groups needs to talk and learn about each other more but it takes time and we still have another semster. We are all taking failures and success well. We agree that it is our team that is doing good and not just one individual. We act as the team has won not one person doing it all.

  5. our group is unique in that we get along well and understand each others differences. to become a team we have successfully been spending time together in and out of class so we can better know each other . one thing we need to work on is our communication. when we are arranging times and places to meet we sometimes end up all over the campus because of last min changes. when it comes to success and failure i think the whole group is responsible. if someone slacks the group needs to fill in for him or her, but the teacher should be notified so they are not given credit fo rthings they did not do

  7. I think what makes my group unique is the fact that we all bring something different to the group. The las time we met we shared some great experiences and learned more about eachother. I think that we are doing well with our communication and leading. We all have been willing to do our part and lead when needed. I think that we can improve on getting to know eachother. We have been able to share with our group members but given more time I think this will come. As for failure, I feel that if we failed, we would all take responsibility for our failure.

  8. What makes the group I am in unique is that each member brings something different to the table. What are group is doing to become a team is that we are communicating better. We are able to get successfully complete tasks. I can't think of anything we need to improve upon at least nothing important. I feel if are group is succesful all members are responsible. The same goes for failure.

  9. The group I'm in is unique because we are each different and bring something different to the table. I think our group has gotten a ton better at communication! I think our group is slowly getting to know each other and bonding better together. I think all members of our group would be willing to be accountable for failures that the we made, and same with successes.

  10. I think that what makes the group I'm a part of unique is our ability to improvise. Even with our first project, we were running low on time(kind of my fault), and we managed to get together and assign tasks and complete the paper in a very short matter of time. For us, I think that the biggest obstacle is just getting to know each other better and getting a better feel for each ones strengths and weaknesses. I suppose that we could all be a little better at communicating, that's always a tougher one. I think that as we get to know each other better we'll become more of a team unit. Accountability is huge in any team and I think that we do a good job at keeping each other in check. Katie, Joe, Sarah, Nate, and myself are slowly but surely moving from "gream" to "team".

  11. i think that what makes our griup unique is our minds all think alike. We usually always tend to agree on things, which makes it easier to avoid conflict. To become more of a team i think we are starting to come out of our shells, and be more comfortable around each other. With our improved communication it is easier for us to get things done and be more succesful.
With our improvemnt i think that is also where we are sturggling to. There are times where things are just kind of awkward where no body is talking. As soon as our comofrt level reqaches its max i think we will be the ultimate team. I think to be the ultimate team you need to say that all successes and failures are a group thinkg. Like in sports, you cant place the blame on one person for a play that cost your team the game. It was the whole team before that. The same thing goes for when you succeed. It wasa team effort, eithout the team you wouldnt have won. I think it is the same hting here, you succeed as a team, you fail as a team.

  12. The things that make our group unique are the individual aspects that each person brings to the group. For example one person is more organized and keeps the group on task. The things that help our group develop into a team are our communication, supportiveness, and our ability to listen to one another. One of the things that our group may need to improve on is getting together outside of class. This will allow us to get to know each other in a different setting and bring us closer together. Having the entire group be accountable for our failures and successes helps keep each member working hard. We do not want to let each other or ourselves down.

  13. I think what makes our group unique is that we all work really well together and we respect each other and all like each other. At first we were all kind of shy and nervous about what everyone was thinking about each other and if they really wanted to be with us in a group but now since we meet quite a bit, we are all friendly and if we have classes with someone is our group we always say, “hi,” to them and make a conversation with them. Our group, like others have said, need to improve on meeting times. If we set a time to meet we need to make sure to show up and be on time. I think it is a good thing that each of us are accountable for failures and success so we don’t depend on each other too much and realize we need to accept our actions, good or bad.

  15. Our group is unique because even though we only have one boy in our group, we still get along very well and its not akqard for matt and the girls dont over power at all, we work together as a team. Our gruop is succefully acting like a team becuase we communicate very well with each other and we do our jobs so our group is successful. One thing that we need to improve on is going outside of our confert zone, beucfase our group is very talented and i think we can do better a lot better. I feel that each member is very accountable and if we fail, we work together as a team to correct it. The thing about being in groups/teams is that if one person fails, we all fail, if each individual does good, we all succeed.

  17. I think that our group is unique because we all bring something different into a group and getting along very well. We understand each other which is very important part of the team formation.I think our group is successful because we count on each other and expect task to be completed by each member. Also we helping each other by compeleting those tasks as a group.
I believe that the fact being accountable for failurs and successes makes my group(team) going. In order to not let each other and group down we work harder that we would do on our own. The feeling of responsibility before each other has a big influence on performance of a group. I think my group need to improve our way of communication. I believe it well be resolve with time.

  18. I think that our group is unique because each of us as individuals bring something different to the table, and that makes us work well as a team. To develop successfully into a team, our group is showing up on time for meetings, helping each other out with anything and everything... talking to get to know each other better which makes us come together as a team. As for what we should do to improve team development, I think maybe we could get together a couple more times through out the week and just hang out together to learn more about each other, rather than just getting together to do work. If we do that then it might make our communication skills better and we'll be able to understand where each other is coming from more because we know more about one another. Overall, I feel that evveryone is accountable for success and faliure. We are one team. We work together to succeed or fail.

  19. I agree and like what Jeff had to say. We are unique because we are NOT artistic, but we are the TREMENOUS FOUR :) We do have fun and that helps us to easily be able to work as a team.

  20. I agree with Melissa, we really need to work on our communication skills and time arranging. I guess we just need to be clear on what we are saying and not be shy to ask if we don't understand.

  21. I really like what Kristy said about us getting together a couple more times a week to get to know each other a little better rather than getting together to just do work. I think itd be fun for the Tremenous Four to get together :)

  22. 1) How we all get along so well together. We never really went through the awkward beginning stage that groups usually go through. We all work well together and are always having a good time when we are all together.
2)I think the one thing my group is doing great in is communication. From the very start we all have been very good at communicating to each other individually and as a team.
3)I think the thing we have to work on the most is finding more time for our group to meet up with each other. When we did our first project we struggled trying to find a time we all could meet up and work on our project.
4)I think we are all accountable for our success and failure. If someone in our group fails we all fail but it is our job as a group and as a team to make sure everyone in our group is on the same page.

  23. I agree with u travis. Our group is pretty damn awesome haha. But yeah we still have a little more improving to do, but i think our group has definitely came a long way then the way it was when we first started.

  24. As Jeff said, our group is unique because we have a wonderful group name the tremenou four:) we all bring something different to the group and that explains why we are also unique. I feel that we have gotten to be more comfortable around eachother so its no awkward, we can just hang out. We are showing sucess because we all show up to meetings and we help eachother out. The group projects that we have done so far have been really sucessful. From what Kristy said about making our team improve, we could get together more. I really like that idea alot. Otherwise i really do feel our groupe does a great job of just being together and helping everyone out at all times. I think that we would all be accountable if we had a failure on something. Even if we have a leader or not, its everyone because we work together and are one team. We just have to try and make sure everyone is on the same page on what we are doing.

  25. Lol Jeff i really like your post, the tremenous four for sure:) its very unique! and Kristy your idea was really good. I think it would be cool if we got together maybe one more time a week and just hang out for even just a little bit. That would be fun and would let us get to know each other just a little more. :)

  26. 1. Our group is unique, because we all are very different. I think that outside of class we would never of thought to be in a group together. We all have different qualities and ideas that we bring together as a group.
    2. Our group is developing into a team as we are doing our projects. It's fun to be outside of class doing projects that we came up with, and it's a good way to talk and get to know our group members. We all have different interests that we get to see while doing these projects.
    3. As Maria said, we need to improve on our communication. In the beginning we had lots of troubles trying to get together for our group project. We are getting better about it now, and it will improve over time. It was good to get that obstacle out of the way in the beginning of the year, so now we know how to do things differently. Also, I think we would become closer as a group if we did things outside of class every once and a while.
    4. I think that all of us take responsibility for our failures and success for the most part, which is a good thing. Since we are in a group, it can not be just one persons fault, we all contribute.

  30. i think our group is unique in the sense that we are still learning things about eachother, and yet we still function as if we have known everyone for years. something that we do well is when we are doing a group activity, we don't have that big barrier to keep us from communicating. we can talk to eachother and know what we want done. the thing that we need to improve on is two things in one. we have to continue to work on both letting people know times and places to meet and then finding those things that work for everyone. i think that we all know that we hold eachother responsible for what they do. we have gotten to the point where i believe we are old enough to accept our responsibilities.

  31. My group is a lot of fun! We have all bonded a lot since the beginning of the year. My group is unique because we are all very different but we all get along really well. If we weren’t placed into a small group together we probably wouldn’t have had a chance to get to know each other. I think our differences are what make us a successful group. Through working on different projects together we are learning each other’s interests, strengths, and abilities. We have figured out what each person likes and dislikes. Being friends has made us a stronger team. We are pretty good as a group the only thing that I can think of is that we could work on our communication skills a little. We communicate pretty effectively for the most part although we have run into a problem with poor communication on occasion. We just need to be clear about what the plans are and ask questions when we are unsure of what is going on. We have not run into any failures yet but I feel like if we did we would be able to handle them because we are a strong team. We share our accomplishments as a group.

  33. Our group is unique because we each bring something to the table through our ideas and thoughts. Our team has good communication skills between each other and that helps us create a successful team. Even though we have good communication, we need to talk and get to know each other better outside of class. I think that failures shouldn't always be the whole teams fault with a good reason but it is the group's job to finish a task. I think that individuals should take the failure that they caused.

    I agree with Cassandra

  34. Our group is unique because we have never really had a problem getting along. Right from the start we were all very open to getting to know each other and becoming friends. There were never any major conflicts and there is really no one that doesn't get along with everyone else in the group.
However things are still a little awkward sometimes because we are still working on becoming friends and being comfortable with each other, but that will come with time. We haven't really had any other problems aside from awkwardness.
