Dignity Quotes

"Education can give you a skill, but a liberal education can give you dignity" Ellen Key

  4. So the first quote says we can learn freely with dignity and the second is we shouldn't tolerate bad things. That you can understand more about others without judging them. Use them by listening to others. I open a door today for someone.

  5. I think the first quote is saying that there are some things we can learn in the classroom and things we learn on our own, or by even watching people. For example, if i saw someone open a door for someone, i would realize thats a nice getsure and i would do that next time. Or if someone dropped their pencil pick it up for them, its just the nice thing to do. And in the second quote, its saying that if we watch someone act in a bad deed and dont stop it, we are just as guilty for not stopping them or at least say somthing to them. These quotes show dignity becuase its telling us that we need to be respectful and the more people with dignity in the world, the better it will be, but its a group effort. One dignified thing i did today was help someone build up there self esteem.

  6. quote #1-there are many skills you can learn in the classroom that can be used daily, and there are also values that can be learned outside of the classroom such as dignity. quote #2-you should always show dignity, and also show it to others. undignified deeds should not be tolerated. i opened the door for people today, and i helped someone study.

  7. quote #1- two types of learning are required to be successful: traditional informitave and also life learning, like the skills needed to be socially successful such as dignity
quote#2- Every action you partake in should be fueled by dignity. If you see something undignified happening fix it with dignity.
*today I helped someone pick up their things after they dropped their bag down the stairs rather than laughing which someone else was doing.

  8. The Ellen Key quote seems to mean that you can learn how to be a good business-person for years, but without ethics and morals and dignity, it's all quite useless. It's hard to tell what to tolerate and what to oppose. I bet we all have friends that do things we know are wrong. If we choose to tolerate things that are wrong, the greater the odds that eventually we'll not even consider them to be wrong. I think that dignity can be destroyed a lot easier than it can be re-built.

  9. Quote one is about dignity in and out of the class room. you learn how to show dignity and you see how it is done. the second quote is about not putting up with bad behaviors. If you tolerate it you are also showing bad dignity behavior. today I helped my roommate with her homework and opened the door for Sammi! :)

  10. So to me the first quote means you can be taught about history and math in a classroom, but dignity is something you have to learn from everyday life over years of experience. The second one i think says that if you tolerate peoples bad habits then you yourself aren't showing good dignity. You should be the dignified person and help them overcome their intolerable acts. Today i quizzed my roommate for his test, and walked to class with him.

  11. The quote by Ellen Key, to me, means that being educated gives you skills - it makes you learn new things, and the more you learn the more dignified you become. The second quote is kind of confusing to be, but if I had to describe it I would say its trying to tell us that if we show our dignity to others, dignity will be seen (will come out) in everyone else, but if we dont care to show dignity then we'll all lose it. They can be applied by simply being respectful. Its like treating people how you want to be treated... thats dignity and its a very easy concept to portray day in and day out. I've shown dignity today by holding the door open for a stranger, and also smiling and saying "hi" to people in the halls I dont know. Just a simple act of kindness can turn somebodys day around :)

  12. I feel that the first quote is saying that school will better your knowledge, but your morals and dignity are taught to you by the important people in your life and by learning from mistakes. The second quote is saying that if we put up with people that are doing stupid things and don't try to stop it, we aren't showing dignity because we are letting it continue to happen. Today I brought my friend to the pharmacy because he needed a ride.

  13. I think Ellen Key meant that you can become an expert in a specific subject, but it is more important to become an expert in a specific subject and respect others and truly care about others while you apply your education. It says that dignity can only be present if you want it to be present and want to act dignified. I think the second quote says that our own dignity for ourselves moves us to show dignity toward others, but if we witness an undignified act and do not do anything, we then lose our own dignity. These quotes can help me to remember througout my days here at css to learn with dignity and to always act dignified and to attempt to stop undignified acts! Today I have held doors for others and tried to respect my roommate while she was still sleeping.

  14. I believe that the first quote is saying that education in the classroom teaches you a craft or skill, but when you put your education to action, you start to develope dignity. I think that the second quote is saying that to those whom much is given, much is required. We need to use the gifts we are given to help those who are in need. These quotes can remind me every day that I need to use my gifts to help others. Today, I helped my little brother study for his tests tomorrow and helped him with the rest of his homework.

  15. The first quote is saying that to truly become educated you need to be open to new ideas. The second quote is saying we lose our own dignity if we allow others not to act with dignity. You can apply these concepts by acting dignified in your everyday life. Today I held the door open for someone I didn't know.

  16. The quote written by Ellen Key is saying to me that having education alone isn't going to help unless you have dignity from the liberal arts to use the education ypu have obtained correctly. The second quote says to me that if we tolerate those around us that are intolerable to others then we are not shining our signity to the rest of the population and that to other people we are no better than the intolerable themselves. The actions that I did today was show up on time for class and talked with dignity when I established a meeting for my flag football team. Go Ligers!

  17. I have a questions for you all. Is holding a door open for someone an act of dignity or is it something that is socially expected?

    What do you think?

  18. To me the first quote is saying that there are two different types of learning in this world. One being the knowledge more of the quantitative values, like numbers and "book smarts", and the other being the common sense or "street smarts". Neither is more important than the other, but both are needed to be a fully functioning member of our community. And at times they will be tied together and needed to compliment eachother. The second quote talks about how if we tolerate what we know is wrong and unjust, we are becoming as bad as the ones who are commiting the intollerable act. And with the door thing, I think it has become more and more of a thing to be expected from people. Even if we don't know the people we are almost inclined to try and help him/her out. And I think this comes with the expectation that they would do the same thing if you switched spots with them.

  19. I think the first quote is saying that an education is key. It is a great thing to have and a must have in the world today. I think when the author mentions a liberal education he/she is talking about a college education, and talks about how important that a college education is in the world of today. The second quote i think is talking about having dignity for yourself and the world. standing up for what u believe is right and they way the things should be. Both quotes are stating that dignity is like respect. I try and show dignity in everyday life by being kind and going out of my way to be respectful.

  21. Quote #1- I think that Ellen Key is saying that learning in a classroom is different than learning from experiencing life.
Quote #2- Dignity should power/influence all actions you do and also that we can learn more about people by not judging them before you get to know them.
I think that we should always try to remember to be respectful in all the actions we partake in.

  22. I agree with what Dan said about the first quote in how he makes college such a big part of surviving in the world. I also like how Becca explains the second quote, by saying that if we dont stop undignified acts, we ourselves are losing our dignity.

  23. I agree with what casssandra had to say. No matter where we go, we should show dignity and make a diffrence in this world.

You explained those quotes really well and I agree with what you said. School will better your knowledge and learning from your mistakes is a good way to reveal your dignity. And if we let people continue to do dumb things, we are not really showing dignity.

  25. I agree with Kristy because if we don't show others acts of kindness or dignity it won't happen. Also with the education thing.
Yeah openning a door for someone is dignity but on the other hand no. Thid is because we are kinda told to open a door, but we also do this without thinking. There is more that we could do that would be better for others.

  26. As I understand it, the first quote is saying that we can learn about dignity and its meaning in a class. But to trully understand what dignity represents and be aware of it we have to experience dignity in our life.
The secound quote is saying that we always have to remember who we are and act according to our dignity. We need to listen to each other and help one another to make right choices. We need to understand what is wrong and provide it from happening.
I helped my roommate to study for a quize today.

  27. Education is an important value of our lives in this world today and continuing into a further "liberal" educaton is perhaps more learning then most other forms of education. Liberal education meaning higher education such as college. I think that the quote says that being in a "liberal" education you are more involved in the community and is more familiar with dignity therefore higher education gives you a better oppurtunity to understand dignity. The second quote is mainly of your beliefs and being respectful, which in my opinion is being dignified. An act of dignity that I have done today was help a girl get to her class when it was her first day to this school.

  28. My act of dignity was giving my calculator to a fellow classmate in need, and I did my math work for chemistry on paper.

  29. I agree with nJackson about his views about the quotes. If we do not act with dignity and dont help others act with dignity then there is no dignity to be shown. And we do not have any dignity if we allow others to act with out dignity.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree with Travis, we learn by our mistakes and if we let undignified acts continue then we ourselves are not being dignified. If we show lack of respect to people that are being disrespectful then we ourselves are being disrespectful because we are not helping the situation. If they continue with their actions they'll begin to think their actions are right and will not be fixed which is hard to be dignified then. However, dignity can exist on many levels.

  31. I think holding the door for someone is an act of dignity but in the subconsious kind of way. I think its merely more of a socially expected action

  32. the first quote means that there are many different things in school ad the classroom you learn and then in the outer world and in society you learn values and from other people also.

the second quote means you should always show your dignity to others and if you see others not you can try to fix it

everyday i will hold open the door if someone else is right behind me. its just the nice thing to do instead of letting it go in their face. people do the same to me.

  33. i agree with david, and i like the way he explained the first part about learning is good but without ethics and morals it's almost useless. and it is true in most cases that eventually you don't see wrong or let it go it isn't wrong anymore. the last part was also good.

  34. I agree with Dan in the fact that dignity and respect are closely related. Respecting someone is also showing them dignity. I also really liked Maria's explanation of the quotes. A huge part of dignity is listening and observing the others around us.
I think that opening a door for someone is a socially expected form of treating someone else with dignity. I believe dignity is a very crucial part of society and even some things that are expected are dignified.

  35. To me the first quote means that we can learn skills by studying facts, but in order to learn about dignity we must take in experiences in out lives and environments. The things we learn from our parents help form our dignity and moral beliefs. The second quote talks about how we lose our dignity if we see things going on that are not right and do nothing to stop them. If we see someone being treated unfairly or unjustly it is our responsibility to see that this stops.

  36. I agree with Cassandra A. dignity is not learned in the class room. I also like how she stated "always show dignity, and also show it to others". I think Cassandra is correct in stating we should always show dignity no mater what.

  37. I agree with dan that the first quote highlights how important education is. As for holding the door open is there really a difference between dignity and socially expected?

  38. I agree with Joe. School teaches you certain things but life gives you the experience to be a better dignified person. Also, that by tolerating bad habits we ourselves are not being dignified people. Holding the door open for someone is an act of dignity because it is showing that you are a respectful person. How do you feel when you are walking behind someone and they dont atleast push it back open? I feel its kind of rude if you dont atleast push it back open, but thats just my opinion!

  39. I agree with Cassandra. Dignity is just the right thing to do. It is just better to always be kind and respectful to everyone. I also think opening the door for someone is an act of dignity because it is showing how respectful you are as a person.

  40. I like the way that Cassandra put the quotes, especially the second one. We should always show dignity to others. But I also know that I am not perfect and we all mess up sometimes. That's why another part of dignity is the ability to forgive. Even when we are wronged, we can still show dignity in our response to that situation.

  41. I agree with Travis. You learn knowledge in school, but you learn how to act as a person from either your parents, or a close friend. That's who makes you who you are in life. In the second quote we both agree that it seems to be our duty to correct people if they are being "undignified." It makes you feel better as a person, and will also make them better as a person too.

  43. In response to Monica's comment i think that it could go either way depending on the personality of the person. Some people think that it is expected for someone to hold the door open for them. Others hold that it is dignity that influences people to hold and open doors for people. I personally think that it's dignity that influences people to hold the door open and open the door for people. JON COUNTESS

  44. I agree with Sarah when she says that we don't learn everything about people when we judge them too quickly. We don't even have the right to really judge them at all. We don't know what they've been through or had to do.

I agree with what you are saying and like how you said that those whome much is given, is much required. Trully individuals are unique because of their gifts and have to use thier gifts to help others in their needs.

  48. The second quote really stood out to me. The last sentence in particular I found interesting. 'We lose dignity if we tolerate the intolerable.' This speaks to the way many of us think today, out of sight out of mind. Just because we don’t contribute to undignified acts doesn’t mean we are anymore dignified than the people doing them. In order to be dignified we must go out and help those in need, we can’t just ignore them and hope the problem goes away. For example even though we know child abuse is bad, if we don’t do anything to stop it we are just adding to the problem and losing dignity because we are not helping. Next time you see someone in need of help don’t just walk away and pretend there is nothing wrong, stop to see if there is anything you can do to help. Today I included people in activities so that they wouldn’t be left out.

After thinking about it, I think holding a door open for someone is something that is socially expected. Not eveyone does it, so you can think of it as an act of dignity, but really its just polite to hold the door open for the person behind you. So yeah, its socially expected.
